How a Water Softener Works

A standard whole-house water softener operates on the principle of ion exchange, or “cation exchange.” Hardness minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and even some iron, are attracted to special resin beads inside the softener’s tank. In exchange, harmless sodium ions are released into the water. Periodically, the system regenerates itself by flushing these resin beads with a saltwater brine, effectively cleaning away the trapped hardness minerals, which are then discharged as waste, preparing the system for its next cycle of delivering soft water.
